Help With Back Pain

How's your back?
Take our FREE
Low Back Pain Questionnaire
and find out!

At any given time, 15 to 20 percent of adults suffer from low back pain, and up to 90 percent will experience it at some time in their lives. Low back pain has also become a hazard to family economy as an estimated 250,000 industrial workers each year are disabled by the condition. The high incidence of problems is not surprising when you consider that 75% of all forward bending or stooping motions occur in the lower back.

If you experience pain or discomfort in the lower part of the back, or pain and numbness that moves down your leg, you are well aware of how disturbing it can be to your lifestyle. Low back pain may prevent or severely compromise your ability to work, play, sit or, in severe cases, even walk.

In most cases, low back pain is caused byHuman Spine poor muscle tone in the back, muscle tension or spasms, back sprains, ligament or muscle tears, or joint problems. Nerves from the spinal cord may also be irritated by "slipped" discs causing buttock or leg pain, numbness, or weakness. It is important to properly diagnose the cause of the pain as soon as possible. The Chiropractic physician uses neurological and orthopedic tests to determine the cause and the extent of the problem. X-rays will alert the doctor to bone diseases or other conditions that could be causing the pain, and allow him to determine spinal misalignments or disc problems.

Over half the patients seeking Chiropractic care do so for low back or leg pain. Therefore, Chiropractic physicians continually research and improve treatment methods for these conditions. Spinal manipulation, also called adjustment, is one of the best studied treatments for low back pain. After a two-year study by a multi-disciplinary panel of health authorities under the direction of a division of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, spinal manipulation has been recommended as a first line of treatment for low back problems in adults. Doctors of Chiropractic are extensively and formally trained in spinal manipulation in their professional colleges.

Chiropractic care, when compared to surgery, is a much more conservative method of managing and treating lower back pain. The danger of surgical complications and the certainty that surgery will affect the stability of the spine indicate the advisability of trying a conservative approach first. Even having a lot of back pain does not by itself mean you need surgery. Surgery has been found to be helpful in only 1 in 100 cases of low back problems. This is especially true if your only symptom is back pain!

The best care of back and leg pain is the multi-disciplinary approach between members of the healing profession. Many doctors are now recommending that a 6 to 8 week course of Chiropractic care should be obtained before surgery is considered. Of course, there are times when surgery is the only answer. If this is the case, and your doctor of Chiropractic is not able to help you, he or she will refer you to the appropriate medical professional.

If it is determined that surgery is your only answer, or you have already undergone surgery for your lower back problem, a carefully designed program of Chiropractic care will often speed post-surgery healing and help you to overcome the limitations caused by surgery.
